Career Pivots, Transferable Skills, and Redefining Work

When working with clients considering a career change or exploring new ways of working, I always begin with a few simple yet powerful questions.

Questions That Reveal Transferable Skills

  • What have you most enjoyed doing in your past roles?
  • What strengths have consistently shown up throughout your career?
  • What themes or patterns have drawn you to certain roles or positions?

These questions help clients take a step back and reflect on their careers from a high-level perspective, not based on job titles or performance reviews, but from their own experiences, values, and strengths. It is a chance for them to be at the center of their own career story.

Too often, the workplace focuses on areas of improvement. In these conversations, we intentionally highlight stretch projects, achievements, and impact, revealing the client's unique corporate strengths.

Look Beyond Job Titles

The initial response is usually centered around technical skills: what they did and how they did it. But to identify transferable skills, we dig deeper:

  • What enabled you to do the work so well?
  • What strengths set you apart from others?
  • How did your approach create value?

Surprisingly, after these conversations, many clients realize they no longer want to pursue the same roles. They are able to see career options beyond job titles and sometimes even discover ways to monetize their expertise or create new streams of income.

Coaching Expands Possibilities

One thing I have noticed: many professionals only meet with an Executive Coach when there is a workplace challenge. But coaching is not just about solving problems. It is about expanding possibilities.

That is the part I love most: helping people reframe their experience, own their strengths, and see what is possible when they put themselves at the center of the conversation.

Key takeaway

Career pivots become clearer when professionals look beyond job titles and performance reviews to identify strengths, values, patterns, and transferable skills.
